The new year is a perfect time to look over your life and see what legal changes you may need to make. Here is my list of 4 important legal considerations.
1. Look at Your Will
What has changed in the last year? A new baby? Retirement? Medical diagnoses of an adult child? Any one of these can alter what you want done with your things and who controls them after your death. Here are some considerations: who will raise your child, who gets your property, and how are things divided among your heirs? If you die without a will, the state of Georgia decides who gets what, and you may not like the outcome.
2. Increase Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Call your insurance agent now. Really. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage is amazingly inexpensive, and it pays you if you get hit by the estimated 1/3 of people on Georgia roads who have too little or no insurance. The state says 12% of drivers do not have any insurance, and I estimate at least 20% have the minimum — which is too little to cover you if you are in a serious accident. Don’t feel you need it? Go down I-520 and look to the right and the left. In a wreck, are you really going to trust these folks to pay for your pain and suffering?
3. Protect What You Bought
Did you buy anything this past year that needs to be insured? What about that Christmas gift of jewelry or the antique guns you inherited? It may be time to change your homeowner’s policy to include them. Don’t wait for theft or fire to see if they are covered.
